Nya Rawlyns' Bad Boyfriends series begins with Curling Iron, and it's a beautiful introduction. Curling Iron is the lightest of the three books (there is a Volume 2, as well), but that in no way indicates that it's fluff. Rawlyns doesn't write fluff. Like all her characters, Kane and David Black (the focus for Curling Iron) are complex, fully realized, and immediately engaging.
David is living on Ramen noodles and little else, and when he's laid off his day job, the owner of the club where he works weekends maneuvers him into a stint as a pole dancer. While he's gifted and trained as a dancer, the pole aspects of things isn't within his comfort zone. He's a good boy, he is, as he tells us and himself throughout the story.
Kane runs both a gym and an escort service which specializes in meeting the needs of a very specific gay clientele, and he runs it well. Marshall, Kane's treacherous ex is determined to ruin him, both professionally and personally, and he's very good at what he sets out to accomplish. When he poaches several of Kane's best employees shortly before a convention that promises to be precisely what Kane needs to get the business back on track, it's time to start finding talented replacements. David looks to be exactly what he's looking for.
Kane and David's meeting is electric. Both men are attracted so strongly that they're overwhelmed by the experience, and by David's 'audition' as a possible escort in addition to providing a show for the convention attendees. The course of many things besides love never runs smoothly, and it certainly doesn't for these two. Both are emotionally wounded and wary of new relationships; both need far more than a casual roll in the hay; neither man is comfortable with what he feels or with what he assumes the other feels. The pressure on both, internally and through the machinations of Kane's ex, is a barrier to their finding happiness. Will they come through this together?
The second book, Pumping Iron, steps things up a notch. Marshall hasn't given up, so Bad Boyfriends is still on rocky ground. One of the escorts, Sean Rourke, gets in a bit of hot water when the third party his client picks out for a little extra fun turns out to be a vice cop. He can redeem himself in Kane's eyes by keeping the client entertained and away from his law firm for a very long weekend, but he'll need some help with that.
To provide that help Kane selects Mike Douglas, the top dog at the gym. The trainer everyone loves to hate. The one who has trouble disguising his interest when Sean is around. A getaway in the Hamptons goes sour when Mike and Sean discover that the client's partners have a hidden agenda in offering Kane a hefty bonus to keep Junior occupied. Loss of his share of the take from that job puts Sean in a world of hurt. He's got a debt to pay to creditors that aren't known for their friendly collection methods. Things rapidly become dangerous for Sean and Mike on more levels than simply their awkwardness in making a good time in the Hamptons into the relationship they both want. Can they survive the perils of the heart and the menace of the mob?
Rawlyns' writing style is lean. There aren't flowery descriptive phrases interfering with the action. She parachutes the reader into the story rather than genteelly opening a door and ushering them in. Her style may be lean, but it's also very deep. There's no attempt to avoid the turmoil, no prettying things up. With Rawlyns, the reader gets hard-hitting conflict, whether that be emotional or physical. This series may be somewhat lighter than many of her other books, but it is in no way trivial or a surface-level story. Rawlyns demonstrates amazing breadth of range as well as depth in her body of work. Bad Boyfriends is a superb addition to her catalog.
