Burton Egbert Stevenson wrote The Gloved Hand in 1913, the fourth of his murder mysteries with Godfrey and Lester as the detectives. Godfrey is a former police detective who is now a newspaper reporter who specializes in crime. He is the brilliant investigator similar to Sherlock Holmes. Lester is a lawyer who is the narrator of the books who lacks Godfrey's brilliance. In this novel, set in the Bronx, Godfrey invites Lester to relax in the house he has rented in the country. Godfrey shows Lester a nightly event that takes place in the estate beside his house, this event being a star that falls from the sky as two men, dressed in robes, stand on the top of the house with their arms in the air. The estate is owned by a wealthy American named Vaughan, who has brought from Paris a pair of Hindoo mystics. The primary mystic is a Portugese named Sylva. Vaughan is found dead.
As the novel unfolds, Godfrey and Lester, with the help of Detective Simmonds of the NY police, investigate the murder while dealing with Vaughan's daughter, who seems to be the object of Sylva's affection.
The novel includes a Hindoo Thugee, who owns a cobra, and Miss Vaughan's lover, Swain, a wealthy young man who turns out to have lost his money.
Godfrey and Lester solve the case by means of a careful investigation the requires that they interpret the behavior and values of a religion and culture both are unfamiliar with.
The Dodo edition is a good one that includes several illustrations from the original text.

The Gloved Hand A Detective Story Burton Egbert Stevenson 9781357330880 Books Reviews
I think if people are going to read very old books, they shouldn't impose their 21st century political, religious and racial views on it. The mystery is a good one. I'm always surprised how naive Lester is.
Exciting read especially since it was written so long ago in 1913!
I found that it is hard to figure out the order in which best to read this series.
Published in 1903, The Holladay Case A Tale is undoubtedly the first in the series.
Published in 1907, That Affair at Elizabeth is actually the second book in regards to storytelling.
Published in 1904, The Marathon Mystery (A Story of Manhattan) (Jim Godfrey Book 2) is the third book, although published before the second book.
Published in 1911, The Mystery of the Boule Cabinet A Detective Story is the fourth book.
Published in 1920, The Gloved Hand is the fifth and last book in the series.
A tale of fraudulent mysticism, the action all taking place in just a few days in the outskirts of Greater New York. Gripping and convincing.
This is an interesting mystery involving fingerprints. An elderly man is strangled in his home. All evidence points to one individual especially fingerprints which in the time frame of this book is fairly new in forensic science. This is a well written easy to read mystery novel with a twist at the end.
A riveting read!
A lawyer invited to the home of a journalist friend for a few days' rest is plunged into a spine-tingling mystery after witnessing two white-robed figures next door worshiping a slowly-descending blue star that bursts into a shower of sparks just above them. The ritual repeats every midnight--except on nights someone is murdered. I loved the characters, and the suspense mounted with every page.
